Welcome to Motivational Mondays with Mark Kent your weekly Proactive Empowerment Performance (PEP) talk with Mark Kent.

Have you thought about your internal-external test results and how they reflect upon your ability to maintain motivation and stay on task?

Did you notice that a high external score predisposed you to sabotaging types of behaviours i.e. reacting to external events ? i.e. being easily persuaded by others and distracted by insignificant events. If that is the case then you will need to be conscious of these self sabotaging behaviours and tune yourself up to a higher level of closure for task completions.

From my previous weeks of Motivational Mondays you will now understand the brain's natural need for linearity and closure, and the more proficient you become in striving towards these two needs, the more productive and empowered you will be.

Let me give you a couple of scenarios and see what your response would be.

Scenario 1: Lets say you are vacuuming a room and you are almost finished and while moving a chair an unopened envelope with your name on it falls on the floor, what do you do?

Scenario 2: You are washing the dishes and are almost finished and you hear someone in the next room suggest you come and look at something on tv or to get something for them.

If your response in these two scenarios was to stop what your doing and react to the moment then it's a good prediction that you do not consciously strive for closure but will easily be diverted by either an inanimate object (letter) or interpersonal influences. Either way it will be extremely difficult to maintain motivation and stay on task if you are constantly reacting away from your intended goal.

An instinctive response to react to and accommodate the wishes of others can have deep rooted values specific to pleasing others and seeking approval, which will be a later topic on motivation - but for now it is important to become aware of your propensity to be easily distracted thus thwarting your ability to become productive and empowered by exerting your will upon the external universe.

If your answer was that you would continue vacuuming, put the letter aside and come back to it later or tell the person to wait while you finish the dishes, this exerts some control over the external influences which allows you to maintain the momentum that was established in the process of the task. As well, it subtly shifts the universe in your favour. It can change the (knee- jerk reaction) expectations that others have upon you thus allowing for more freedom of choice and movement when pursuing closure.

So to create a higher level of task completion consider these concepts:

A) Become aware just how much you do react to the environment by accommodating others and or events that cause you to shift away your energy and focus.

B) Make conscious efforts to stay on task, put all distractions aside and in a polite yet determined way let others know that when you finish your task at hand then you will attend to their requests.

C) Understand the universe is usually forgiving and will make adjustments if you impose your will and volition to stay on task (that is why the mountain moves to Mohammad)

In other words practice the skill of making the external variables react to you.

Once you have utilized this skill your sense of control, proficiency and sense of well being will emerge as a dominate force in your life.

Next week I will discuss in depth how momentum plays a direct role in the brains need for effeciency and closure and how that directly impacts upon motivation.
