Welcome to Motivational Mondays with Mark Kent your weekly Proactive Empowerment Performance (PEP) talk with Mark Kent.

How about those visual cues? Have you noticed that seeing is believing is doing? Have you noticed less angst, more clarity, consistency, and higher completion rates just by establishing visual reminders?

You may have noticed a higher level of confidence and greater sense of control by following through on the suggestions in last weeks Motivational Mondays. (refer to archives Motivational Mondays 2/17/2007 http://www.superstresssolutions.com/motivationalmondays/)

The reason for your improved sense of empowerment has to do with the innate needs of the brain.

Basically there are four needs.

1) the brain requires blood for the purpose of nutrition.

2) the brain needs REM sleep and without these two physical needs being met we can die.

However, the brain also has two metaphysical needs that are directly associated with task completion and motivation.

These two needs are what I call 3) Linearity and 4) Closure.

What I mean by linearity is the brain has an innate desire to have things straight, that physical surroundings make geometric sense, that life is understood within a cause and effect relationship.

Ever experience the tension of feeling compelled to straighten up a crooked picture or experience angst trying to make sense of random or chaotic events? This is because the brain has a desire to make sense of it's surroundings and will go through great lengths to achieve understanding and acceptance.

The second and perhaps greater drive of the brain is to seek closure. Closure is defined as completing a task or mentally putting an issue to rest.

There are three types of closure that are relevant to motivation.

1) Physical closure: the universe gives us the opportunity to physically move in and finish tasks , attain closure and move onto another task.

Ever wonder why you feel stuck or overwhelmed at times? Look around , you will likely see a great deal of unfinished business.

2) Next there is Psychological closure. When we finish something physically usually our mind follows suit and accepts it.Consequently we achieve both physical and psychological closure that reduces angst frustration and improves our sense of self control and confidence in gaining mastery over our environment.

3) The third level of closure is Fate which usually is not on our side.Fate is by default if we do not achieve physical and psychological closure.

For example if you put off paying the mortgage, taking that class, getting to the gym, worrying and experience angst etc. the universe steps in , takes over and we are now denied fulfillment usually not on your terms often with negative consequences and overriding negative energy in your life.

So to improve your motivation in completing tasks try to follow through on these basic suggestions.

1) Strive for linearity ,that is create order and neatness in your environment. Get the clutter out. This reduces angst and confusion and conversely will increase your sense of control over the environment

2) Strive for closure. Clean up unfinished business, take on and complete one task at a time before another task. Be like a postage stamp stick to it until you get there.

Just implementing these two simple techniques will reduce anxiety improve your proficiency and help you maintain positive motivation over the long haul.

Next week I will show you a proven technique (Proactive Closure) designed to supercharge your quantity and quality of task completion and motivation right now and over the long haul.
